TE 804 Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practices II

Making discoveries about vibrations and sound waves
Spring 2009
Instructor: Wayne Hewitt
Course Description: TE 804 focused on teaching science using the Inquiry method. Throughout this course during my internship, I planned and taught several science units that began with students asking questions. Using various experiments and activities, the goal was for students to be able to answer some of their original questions. One unit that I really focused on allowed my students to explore sound. During this unit, I was also able to integrate my love of music, as we made discoveries about sound waves, pitch, and volume that came from various instruments borrowed from the music teacher. Planning and executing these lessons forced me to practice my classroom management and time management skills, as there were usually multiple experiments occurring simultaneously in the classroom. It also gave me more experience with assessing students so that I could see how much of the unit they understood.
