TE 861A Teaching Science for Understanding

Spring 2013
Instructor: Michelle Williams
Course Description: This course explored strategies for teaching science, particularly through formative assessment. I learned how to utilize various types of formative assessments, as well as why it is critical for teachers to use formative assessments during any unit of study. Teachers must understand where their students are at the beginning of a unit and how they are progressing through it. They should also use these assessments to reflect upon their own effectiveness and make decisions about future teaching and lesson plans. The main goal of formative assessments is not to assign students letter grades, but to track their learning along the way. I used several kinds of formative assessments while teaching a human biology unit to seventh graders that focused on body systems and how they work together to perform specific functions.
