ED 800 Concepts of Educational Inquiry

7th grade published children's books
Fall 2009
Instructor: Dr. Steven Weiland
Course Description: ED 800 explored the history of many teaching strategies (including John Dewey, E.D. Hirsch, Nell Noddings, and Howard Gardner) and how they're used today. I also read about examples of teachers who used the inquiry method to determine the best strategies for teaching their classes or a specific student. With these inquiry questions came much reflection on the teachers' part. Relating these teachers' experiences to my own helps me reflect on what strategies work well for some of my students. Keeping in mind concepts from this class, I have been able to apply some of these strategies in my classroom. Particularly relevant to me are balancing Dewey's theory of teaching using practical tasks with Hirsch's traditional education of core subject knowledge and Noddings's emphasis on forming caring, trusting relationships with students.
