TE 855 Teaching School Mathematics

Exploring the number symbol-quantity relationship
Fall 2010
Instructor: Dr. Kristen Bieda
Course Description: TE 855 explored the concept of teaching math reasonably. This means helping students understand how to reason through math concepts logically, building on concepts and rules they already know, rather than solely memorizing rules and formulas. This course showed how, if students could learn to reason through math concepts logically, they could also use their knowledge in real life situations. Since I was teaching kindergarten at the time, I focused a lot on relating number symbols to physical amounts of objects, teaching students that number symbols had meaning behind them. This helped my students advance their number sense.
